ECX RC posted a cool video to YouTube today showing a sped-up timelapse of the steps required to build the new AMP MT Build-N-Drive kit released last month. The sport-level Horizon Hobby brand released the truck last month, packaging the electronics and parts needed to build the also-available-RTR monster truck as an educational RC tool for just $130.

As I watched the video, my amusement the cool clip gave way to curiosity as to who was doing the building. The Sticky Kicks RC t-shirt was the dead giveaway - Horizon Hobby and TLR product developer, OCRC Raceway local and factory racer, Frank Root. "It took about an hour and 45 minutes," Frank said after laughing at my detective abilities, "but I was talking through the steps in detail as we shot the instructional video and time lapse concurrently."

ECX RC made the kit-building process more beginner-friendly by pre-assembling the most technical and time-consuming items. "The shocks and diff are already assembled," said Frank, "and the electronics are already bound, calibrated and the servo horn is installed with the servo centered." Frank said he can cut a half-hour off his build time if there's no camera pointed at him. "A straight build with no talking would take me an hour and 15 minutes," said Frank. "With power tools, maybe 45 to 50 minutes."
