In June of 1996 I was an average student, 17 years old and in my final year of high school in Richmond, Ontario, Canada. I was very active, interested in cars and boats and anything that moved and how to make it faster. I had a job, I was set up for co-op at Auto Dealership that spring, I had a good social life…in a word, my life was “On-Track”!
On June 3rd 1996 at high school BBQ event I broke my neck in some foam on the football feild leaving me paralyzed from the chest down...a moment that would instantly change my life.
I was transported to the Ottawa General Hospital. That evening I was put under knife to fuse my broken vertebrae. The next day I was told by the Doctor that I would never walk again. I spent the next 7 months in Rehab trying to relearn basic skills and to regain my independence.
Unable to work on real Cars I purchased my first Radio Control Car a few years ago and fell in love with the hobby. I spend numerous hours in the garage tinkering away. Our local RC track hosts weekly racing events. It is a great way to get out, socialize and meet people with the same interests.
However, in order to make this more accessible, I need your help! A new Wheelchair accessible Driver stand & Platform lift needs to be installed. This way anyone in a wheelchair can see the entire track from the same height as any other driver.
A lift and materials can cost anywhere from $5,000 - $10,000. Since this is Club track and a non profit org. There is no funding for this type of expense.
Any funds received from this campaign will be used towards a new/used wheelchair lift, lumber and materials & labour. If funds raised exceed those costs, the money will go towards making the area more wheelchair friendly. My ultimate goal is to be able to participate in Canadian Off-road Championship July 2015.
Up for grabs is a Brand New Team Associated B44.2 1/10 4wd buggy kit donated by Dynamic Hobbies Inc. Starting today, for every $10 donation made online or in person you will receive one ticket into the draw. Winner will be revealed on July 6th 2015 (For example, if you donate $40 you will receive four tickets into the draw – no limit on the amount tickets being sold.) Thank You to Fred Zufelt for supporting this cause and the RC community for so many years!
