Last week the industry caught the first glimpses of the all-new K2RC Xray short course truck. Josh Wheeler took the truck to a solid victory at the JConcepts Indoor Nationals opening round in St. Louis, Missouri and began a frenzy of drivers wanting to know more!

We got in touch with lead man behind K2RC, Kurt Kellum, and wanted to know more about the truck. He was nice enough to share some never before seen photos of the new truck and inside details behind it!

K2RC Press Release:

K2RC is proud to announce the highly anticipated release of the XRAY XSCT. The XSCT is a ROAR / ProSeries legal 1/10 scale, 4wd Short Course Truck created by serious RC Racers. This SCT was designed from the ground up to be the ultimate vehicle offered on the market to date in the Pro4 class. After months of doing aftermarket design and testing for other brand short course trucks, WBD realized that a legitimate race truck did not exist. Currently every available truck on the market requires the racer to purchase additional parts to upgrade their SCT to get the pro-racer feel and durability that serious racers want. Whether the issue is poor design, bad drive train, chassis flex, inconsistent shocks, or premature wear, something is always needed to make these other trucks into better performers. Understanding that need, WBD created a SCT capable of handling all types of tracks and conditions -- from small smooth technical indoor to massive 1/8 outdoor tracks -- without the need for additional add-ons or parts. WBD began the design phase and decided that the truck be offered on an easy to build platform for Team XRAY drivers who are also interested in racing Short Course. Months of testing and racing on every type of track (except turf) proved the XSCT’s ability to handle any type of racing conditions. The goal of the XSCT is to provide a true, pro-level race platform for racers desiring the absolute highest in performance, adjustability (tunability) and durability. For the beginner or the pro the XSCT will definitely be a winner for years to come.

Some of you may have followed the thread here about whether or not XRAY will make a Short Course Truck. For those of you who have not seen the thread or the short announcement on The Big RC and/or BuggySport.info, this thread is dedicated to the XSCT.

 Key Features of the XSCT:

  • Drive train
  • Suspension
  • Tuning Options
  • Durability
  • Carbon Fiber Adjustable Battery Tray
The drivetrain and some of the other components are straight from the 2011 XRAY 808. The 2009, 2010, 2011, and the highly anticipated XB9 is compatible with the kit. Due to the drive train enhancements XRAY made for the 2011 & XB9 we recommend using either of those two. However, the earlier models listed will work just fine. Since the drive line components are directly from a 1/8 scale buggy premature wear is a non issue, especially using 1/10 electronics and batteries. After 6+ months of weekly racing and testing there has shown to be very little wear. The only wear we have noticed is the drive line pins which are replaceable. The gearbox ratio is also adjustable which is another feature not found in any other SCT currently offered. The gear ratio of the XSCT is 4:3:1, however XRAY offers a variety of tuning options to change the ratio or overdrive the truck if so desired. Ring gears ranging from 38-43 and spur gears from 42-48 in steel and 46 & 50 in plastic, for all your tuning needs.

The suspension has been narrowed to make the truck legal by using different cvd bones and custom arms. The suspension geometry has undergone months of testing to ensure that changes to shock angle and roll center provide the proper feel for any track condition. The XSCT uses 15mm Big Bore Shocks from the 808. Bigger is not always better but, considering the types of conditions the XSCT was built for and ease of build we were after running the larger XRAY shocks was a no brainer. There are no leak issues, lack of piston or spring options and no need for frequent rebuilds. As some of you may know XRAY components are among the highest quality in the industry. No worry of worn shock bodies, collapsed springs, broken shafts, etc. XRAY offers several types of pistons. Tapered, square edge, 6 hole, 8 hole, etc. Several spring choices and if you have the need Kyosho springs will work as well. XRay also offers a plethora of sway bar thicknesses to further tune the truck to any conditions.

Overall durability is greatly improved with the XSCT over other brands once again through the use of XRAY plastics and metals. Like the Chassis, castor blocks, steering knuckles, hub carriers, and camber links. Breakage of these parts is a non issue. XRAY offers different degree castor blocks in plastic and aluminum, inclined and standard steering knuckles in plastic and aluminum as well as horizontal and vertical ball stud rear hub carriers. Also steel and aluminum turnbuckle options as well. All compatible with the XSCT and add to an almost infinitely adjustable platform. No other 4wd SCT comes close to the tuning options offered for the XSCT.
The wheels are in fact 17mm hex which raises the question of availability. The wheels we spec are from DE Racing. The wheels use a 17mm hex and accept standard 1/10 sct tires from all the popular manufacturers. DE Racing wheels are obtainable from most any hobby shop or directly from DE. They are available in white, yellow, black and silver to meet the needs of those who require colors other than black. Also available from XRay are hexes of various thickness to change track width of the truck.
Now onto some other features and facts of the XSCT......

The Carbon Fiber Adjustable Battery Tray has been designed in such a way that it will accept a large variety of batteries. When using a ROAR legal 2s hard case Lipo Battery you are able to adjust the battery fore and aft. The esc shelf in the rear also acts as a sort of suspension for the esc on those hard landings. The XSCT is capable of withstanding much more punishment than an esc so we felt this needed to be addressed to help keep your expensive electronics in one piece. The Carbon Fiber motor fan mount is an option on the truck. Much of our testing early on was performed in 108+ degree weather in the Texas summer. I don’t care what your electronics package consists of, the motor will get hot at these temperatures, so we felt the fan was a nice touch for those extreme climates.

At the moment the front and rear bumpers are from a Losi scte. As time goes on these will change but found bumper details to not be super important. The Losi bumpers work very well and are easily adaptable and are legal.

The weight of the XSCT is not as heavy as one would expect. In prototype form the truck comes in at a respectable 6lbs 4oz using a 4pole and 6lbs 6-7oz using a 550 2 pole. Through the use of aluminum replacement parts such as shock balls, sway bar ends, diff shafts, etc the potential weight could be even less. Driving the truck with either the 4 pole 540 or a 2 pole 550 has proven to be equally affective. Especially with the ability to change gearbox ratios using optional ring and pinion gears from XRAY. We have tested the truck with various 4 pole motors and 1/8 esc but have recently settled on a 1/10 esc and 550 4.5 motor.

Just in case some of you are interested the XSCT can always be converted to nitro. We have not tried this yet but plan to test it in due time. A .21 or. 19 Nitro powered SCT might be a quite interesting class.

K2RC will be putting the XSCT available for pre-order March 2012.  Don’t be left behind.
