Lee and Ng earned victories at AOC race in Singapore

Last weekend, the Asian On-Road Championships held its third round of the 2015 season as Scotty Ernst traveled to Singapore. The facility’s name “Urban Playspace” is not just a play on words - the track is actually located on the roof of a building in the heart of the bustling city-state.

The asphalt racing surface was configured into a technical course that challenged entrants in both the Modified and Blinky 13.5 Stock touring car classes, leading to incredibly close racing.

While the track is outdoors, the on-site hobby shop and pit area is tucked inside.

As with all AOC races, where the focus is on providing a professional atmosphere while maintaining an enjoyable event with maximum track time, both divisions ran six rounds of qualifying and triple main events for every heat. Nicholas Lee captured the TQ for Modified by winning five of the six rounds, while Ng Wei Jian was the fastest in the stock class after winning three rounds and finishing second in a fourth, for a total of two points.

After qualifying the racers headed out for a night on the town, including dinner and a visit to the Light Up The Night Carnival that previews the Singapore GP held next month.

In the first of the Stock class finals, second qualifier Leonard Sim dove to the inside of TQ Wei Jian and pulled away for the win. Wei Jian answered back with a tone-to-tone victory in A2, setting up the battle for the overall championship. Wei Jian nailed the start of A3 and kept Sim in his rear-view mirror, crossing the finish line first to seal the victory. Behind them, Colin Tong finished third.

The Modified division wasn’t quite as close. From the front of the grid, Top Qualifier Nicholas Lee sped away from the field in A1 and A2 to wrap up the title. Daryl Thong, who won the 13.5 Boosted division at the opening round in Shanghai, finished second in the first two finals and won A3 in Lee’s absence, which secured the runner-up spot ahead of PY Tang.

The fourth round of the 2015 Asian On-Road Championships will be held at the Tom Racing Circuit in Hong Kong on September 25-27.
