The 2014 ROAR 1/8 Gas Off-Road Nationals were held this past weekend at Thornhill Raceway in Hutto, Texas. Track owner Chris Allison did an amazing job with the facility to prepare it for the Nationals. He was able to provide a big enclosed covered pit area with A/C, covered warm-up area for the mechanics before the races, and hired World Famous track builder Joey Christensen to design & prepare the track. This years layout was very hi-speed with flowing jump sections. The fastest drivers of the weekend could only get down into the 44-second lap range on one of the largest tracks in the USA. The weather was in the 90's all week long with high humidity that would put everyone's equipment to the ultimate test.
Team Orion's Dakotah Phend would dominate the first day of qualifying by TQ'ing both rounds. This would be enough to give Dakotah the overall TQ as they were the 2 fastest times combined after qualifying was complete. Team Orion would also have Ryan Cavalieri starting 7th and Jared Tebo 10th.
The A-Main would be set for 45-Minutes. As the race began, it was Phend and 2nd qualifier Ty Tessman who would start out on a very quick pace. These two quickly gapped themselves from the field and made it clear this would be a 2 truck race for the Win. As pit stops began to cycle through, Phend and Tessman were never more than 5-seconds apart on the track. As the race progressed, Phend and Tessman would trade back the lead several times. Going into the last lap, it was Tessman holding only a 1-second lead over Phend. As the 2 drivers went through the double / triple section on the right side of the track, Phend would scrub the double and have a perfect line over the triple to land inside of Tessman to take the lead. With only a half lap left to go, Phend would keep a very tight line and would hold off a last corner attack from Tessman to take the Win and the 2014 ROAR Truggy National Championship!
