Last year's ROAR Electric Off-Road Nationals at AMain's Silver Dollar R/C Raceway in Chico, CA was held on one of the most extreme off-road tracks we've ever seen - and the racers' equipment was pushed to the extreme. This year's indoor course at Space Coast R/C is a bit more traditionally sized, with plenty of elevation changes but only a few jumps. In fact, the biggest challenge throughout practice has been finding enough grip to get around the track quickly - and that places utmost importance on every last detail.

Racing Truck Modified

“I haven’t really touched it since I’ve been here,” said Ryan Cavalieri of his mid-motor Centro CT4.2 conversion. “It’s straight off the track from Hot Rod.” Ryan doesn’t plan any changes for his truck heading into tomorrow.

His first weekend with the 22T built in mid-motor configuration, Dakotah Phend has been trying to get the truck where he likes it. He said, “The tracks at home have a lot less traction so it’s hard to know where to start.” Dakotah played with the placement of chassis weights and tuned his front shocks throughout practice and thinks he’s pretty close for qualifying.

Tanner Denney said “it was a little sketchy” when the grip came up in the second round, and his truck got too aggressive. To compensate, he went to a smaller front piston to mimic the shock setup of Cavalieri, and said he’ll “see what happens.”

4WD Buggy Modified

When asked about his 22-4, Ryan Maifield said “It was pretty safe and consistent, and really fun to drive. It’s dialed.” After the first round today he loosened the rear diff and tightened the front. Having run Blue Dirt Webs on the front and rear, he may try Blue Barcodes up front in order to make the car corner more smoothly if the grip continues to increase.

Dakotah Phend said his car was “really good after making a couple of changes to make it more aggressive so I could go faster.” After the first round he moved the rear shocks in one hole on the tower, which made his 22-4 more stable in the sweeper and more aggressive in the 180-degree corners.

When asked how he was doing today, Ryan Lutz said “oh, you know, racing 1/10-scale.” The nitro diehard said his car was “oooookay” and that he spent the day “trying to come to grips with the low traction (get it?) and the bumpiness.” When asked about the changes he made to his Durango DEX410v4, Ryan countered, “Where do you want me to start?” He said he had more adjustments to make for Friday morning’s opening qualifier.

JR Mitch, who along with young Daimon Borkowicz were the only Floridians in the top ten of either buggy class, described his 22-4 as driving well but said he went too stiff on shock oil after the first round, so he planned on splitting the difference.

2WD Short Course Modified

Ryan Cavalieri said his SC10 “showed up working really well” and “I haven’t touched it, either.” He said that landing the triple and heading up the hill through the center of the track and toward the back left was the most difficult part of the track.

"I finally got the balance how I wanted," said Dustin Evans of the performance of his TLR 22SCT 2.0. "The steering, everything - just drove how I like it," he continued, having switched to Green compound Double Dees on the front and a new tire compound that he would not disclose.

“It’s was so dialed. I got a 19.4 - in short course!” exclaimed an elated Spencer Rivkin. Running Brian Kinwald’s personal SC10, he installed his own shocks for the second round which he said were set up a bit stiffer and his truck came to life. He’ll only be installing new tires for tomorrow.

Having never competed in short course at a major event and only logging a couple of club races on the truck, Billy Easton said today was all about learning what to do. When describing his Serpent SRX-2 RM, Billy said, “I learned it needs a little better setup.” Billy said the breakthrough came today when he noticed the faster drivers in the class were running a pin-type front tire and a less aggressive suspension setup, whereas he was running the Pro-Line X3 compound Electrons all the way around and more aggressive settings. He tried AKA Soft Gridiron 2’s up front and Typos in the rear, and his truck got considerably better.

2WD Buggy Modified

The only top-seeded driver available for comment after the 2WD practice had concluded, TLR’s Dustin Evans said his 22 2.0 was “awesome” after changing from Blue Barcodes to Dirt Web fronts. With the Barcodes, he said his car was easy to drive but too slow. Dustin was very happy with the buggy and won’t be making changes for Friday morning, but noted that the track changes a lot with the outside temperature. In fact, the groove took until 5 PM on Thursday to really start providing grip, after an overnight water washed it away Wednesday evening, and that Dustin hopes it generates grip better Friday morning.
