Now that the top drivers have separated themselves from the rest of the field as far as points, all eyes are on them when the track goes live - and the drivers are responding to the pressure with higher intensity than yesterday, as the first round of 4WD Invitational on Sunday morning saw those drivers in particular making mistakes that they might not usually commit. Meanwhile, drivers without the pressure of competing for the title were free to drive as hard as possible.

David Ronnefalk took the holeshot over Ty Tessmann in the first heat, but Tessmann got to the inside in the infield sweeper on the first lap. Meanwhile, Billy Easton got a lucky bounce over the step-downs on the next lap to stay in third. At 1:05, Maifield drove to the inside of Easton coming onto the straightaway to take over the spot. The top four ran in formation for the next three minutes before Ronnefalk got hung up heading to the first double on the left side and collected Maifield, which allowed Neumann to jump from fourth to second. On the final lap, Ronnefalk bobbled through the final two doubles and Ronnefalk drove right past, salvaging third for the heat.

Karri Salmela’s car broke during a collision created by a false start, so a delay was called to allow time to fix it. Once the race got under way, JR Mitch took a clean holeshot and Dustin Evans skied over Atsushi Hara on the right side double. At 1:05, Mitch made a mistake before the straight and set off a chain reaction that knocked Evans off the track, and on the following lap Mitch made a mistake through the center of the course that dropped him to third behind Hara and Jared Tebo. The next lap, Drew Moller (who started tenth) got around Mitch and moved into third. At 2:15, Hara crashed on the triple and Tebo moved to the lead. At 3:10, Hara crashed on the left double and Moller got by for second. At 3:20, Tebo crashed on the right double and Moller went by, but Moller crashed on the triple on the final lap and Tebo took a much-needed win.

Rick Hohwart got the holeshot, while a big wreck in the back of the pack in the first couple of corners collected Spencer Rivkin - he never recovered, finishing seventh. Ryan Cavalieri, Dakotah Phend (with a horribly slipping drive belt), and Kody Numedahl all got by Hohwart on the first lap - and that’s how they finished.

With Maifield finishing third while his four closest competitors all scored higher in the round, the gap among the top five overall closed up - and Maifield’s lead shrank from three points to one over Jared Tebo. Two-time defending champion Ryan Cavalieri moved to third ahead of Jörn Neumann by one point, two points behind Tebo. And Ty Tessmann, who has work to do after some tough luck in 2WD, is just six points out of the lead in fifth.

Here are the points standings after round nine:
