XB8E & Malin Karlsen win Gerland Cup in Norway
Last weekend we decided to travel to Skien in Norway to participate in round #1 of the Grenland Cup 1/8 El./IC at their newly updated 1/8 track.
We arrived in the morning with just enough time to put 3 sets of batteries through my XRAY XB8E for practice. For the 3 heats we also tested 3 different sets of tires to determine what was best suitable for the mixed dirt, astro and concrete surface. Race format was 3 x 5min qualifiers and 3 x 12min finals with the 2 best out of the 3 counting for the total.
After the practice heats it was time for qualifying.
I ended up comfortably taking the win in the first 2 qualifying rounds with the only 9 lap runs of the day to take the TQ. We then used the 3rd qualifying round to test a few different settings but opted to go back to our initial setup for the finals.
For the 12 min finals I started from the front but made a few small errors of my own which put me a bit back in the field, but once I got into my rhythm I comfortably took the win in the first 2 finals with the only 21 lap runs of the day to secure the overall win.
Prior to the last final we had some hail that left the track wet and slippery in some parts. We opted to stay with the same setup and hoping for it to dry up. After the start I made a few mistakes of my own in the slightly changed conditions including getting stuck in another cars rear wing. Lost a lot of time and was way back but found my rhythm and started catching up again moving me up to second place.
Although it seemed impossible to catch up to the car running in first position I decided to continue pushing as hard as I could and with only 2 laps left the car in front ran into problems and I could take the 3rd A-final win of the day.
My XRAY XB8E worked perfect all day and I had a great time racing a bit of 1/8th electric buggy again.
