The drivers here have been running for three days already, yet this morning's round was the first that actually counted. Today's practice will be used to set up the qualifying heats, but the arrangement is a bit more complicated than how races are run in the U.S.

Today's two practice runs are ten minutes each, but only the last five minutes are officially timed. Each driver's three fastest consecutive laps earn points, like qualifying, and those points are used to sort the overall order.

Still with me? This is where it gets complicated.

The final order is broken up into three groups: the top 60 go into heats 1 through 5, the second 60 (61-120) go into heats 6-10, and the rest (121-169) into heats 11-14. Those three groups are shuffled, so that the fastest driver in the group is car #1 in that groups first heat, the second fastest driver is #1 in the second heat, and so on. For groups one and two, the seventh fastest driver goes back into the first heat, but as car #2; eighth fastest is in the second heat as car #2, etc.

Got that? It doesn't really matter - the computer does the hard work. All you need to know is that the drivers are grouped into heats with those of at least a similar pace, though with more diversity than the traditional U.S. format that creates an 'A' heat, 'B' heat, etc.

As for what went down in the first timed round, defending champion Robert Batlle picked up where he left off in Buenos Aires, Argentina two years ago by setting the fastest time. The top three drivers were still the same as the rest of the week, with David Ronnefalk and Ty Tessmann joining the Spaniard, they were simply in a different order.

Here's the top sixty:
