Among the news that came out of yesterday’s first two rounds of qualifying came the slip of the week’s second largest (only to the winner of the race, of course) headline - the host of the next World Championships in 2016. Scheduled to be held in the ROAR bloc of North America, RC Tracks Las Vegas beat out the truly incredible facilities located at A Main Hobbies’ Silver Dollar R/C Raceway and Thornhill RC Circuit, host of the 2014 ROAR Fuel Off-Road Nationals.

The race will mark the 16th anniversary of the first 1/8-Scale Off Road World Championship hosted in the U.S. - which was also in Las Vegas.

As of yesterday, RC Tracks Las Vegas was entering the final building phase of the pit area and amenities, though the track is drivable (as you can see in the photos). The business is operated by Chris Tocco, a former pro-level motocross racer and sponsored RC car racer who is a childhood friend of Jared Tebo.

A few years ago, Chris and his brother Cory ran a company called “Tocco tracks” that built private Supercross tracks - many times for professional riders.

According to the ROAR official with whom I spoke about the decision, it was the details surrounding the Vegas location that sealed the deal. The facility is located next to the Sportscenter of Las Vegas, which has a go-kart track and other activities, and the lot on which the track is built is both adjacent to McCarran International Airport and within two blocks of “The Strip.” A convenient travel destination for racers may also entice more spectators to consider making the journey to watch RC’s most exciting event.

Besides, who doesn’t want an excuse to go to Vegas?
