Ty Tessmann took another step toward the overall TQ at the IFMAR Worlds by winning his third straight round, though this time it was by less than four-tenths of a second. With the track temperature hovering around 115 degrees Fahrenheit (about 46 degrees Celsius for our European audience) the third round was much slower than either run yesterday, and the changing track caused plenty of changes in the finishing order.
Here's what happened in the third round of racing:
Ty Tessmann had a solid start to his heat, running behind Ryan Maifield until a terrific pit stop (watch video below), but was involved in a situation in which he checked up because of slower traffic ahead and a recently passed car behind him did not - the incident caused Tessmann to fly off the track and lose several seconds. Once he was back on track, however, he tracked down Mailfield and passed him on the clock during the final lap to take his third straight round win.
Though surely disappointed at not taking the top spot despite leading for nearly the entire race, Ryan Maifield has to be pleased with his progress - a second place finish in round one, seventh yesterday evening, and second again in the third gives him a terrific point total that's second best behind Tessmann after three rounds. He'll only need one more solid run to lock himself firmly near the front of the grid for either semifinal.
"I tightened my swaybars too much and made it a little tippy," said Ryan Lutz of his prototype Team Durango DNX8 after his fourth straight top-10 run. On the second to last lap, Ryan drove off the track after misjudging the double on the left side, which cost three seconds or so. Despite running a developmental AKA compound yesterday he chosen standard Medium rubber for his Catapults this morning and will do the same for the fourth round.
Drew Moller's best run of the first half of qualifying came when he was perhaps the least happy with his MBX7R. "We went from 7/7/6 diff oil to 10/10/8 to make it more stable, but the car never felt like it settled - just glided everywhere." Once discovering the adjustment had gone the wrong direction he just buckled down and did his best. "I just basically told myself to not get out of shape and stay in the groove, focusing on driving easy. You don't have to have 37-second laps the whole time to make the top 20, and going for it can be costly."
The Czech Republic's Martin Bayer was tenth quick after persisting through a bit of a slow start, getting to second in heat one behind Ryan Cavalieri in just a few laps and running behind him for the duration. The finish was his best of the three completed rounds and the highest finish yet for any XRAY driver.
