When the early pioneers of RC cars first began building rudimentary vehicles using electric power, they were simple direct-drive chassis much smaller than the nitro 1/8-scale vehicles that came before them. The first 1/12-scale pan cars hit the track in the late 1970s, but they weren't too far removed from what we see today - even the original Associated RC12e was built on a flat pan chassis cut from fiberglass, rolling on lightweight wheels wrapped in dense foam tires, with single front wishbones and the motor bolted to an axle-supporting pod in the rear of the car.

For many years, 1/12-scale racing wasn't just the pinnacle of on-road competition - it was the only racing division in existence.
