Even in the U.S., the 1/8-scale truck class (or “truggy”) is the undercard to the main event of buggy racing - but in Europe, it’s even more scarce. Few large events even recognize the class, and the drivers rarely practice with the larger vehicles. When Swedish driver and two-time defending European Champion David Ronnefalk switched to HB-HPI Racing for 2015, he immediately built his new 1/10-scale 4WD and 1/8-scale nitro buggies - but only received his D8T Tessmann Edition truck a week before leaving to the U.S. for the Dirt Nitro Challenge. He and his father, Pierre, prepared the truck as it came out of the box and tested it for two tanks at Revelation Raceway in California before hitting the road to Arizona.

Ronnefalk was immediately on pace once arriving at Fear Farm R/C Raceway, setting the fastest time in the first round of qualifying and earning the third spot on the grid for yesterday’s 45-minute A-Main. He held tough through a battle for the ages, eventually distancing himself from teammate Ty Tessmann to become the first European driver to win a Pro nitro division in Dirt Nitro Challenge history.
