With winter coming to a close and spring just around the corner, the Oval @ Lawton RC Raceway in Lawton, Oklahoma is set to open outdoor racing season in Oklahoma on Saturday, March 14, 2020 with its 6th Annual Beans and Cornbread Spring Nationals trophy event. The track promoter, Tyler Johnson, has already been out to the track preparing the surface for the new season, taking care of damage caused by the winter freeze-thaw cycle.

The Beans and Cornbread Spring Nationals is shaping up to be a great event, with commitments from racers all the way from Illinois, to compete in many classes, including outlaw sprint car, street stock, SC modified, Midwest modified, 1/10th scale late model, wingless sprint, 2wd truck, and novice, on the loose dirt, semi-banked oval.

It all goes down on March 14, 2020, with the gates opening at 10:00 A.M., with practice beginning at noon, and racing starting at 2:00 P.M. First entry will be $20 with additional entries $15 each.  The format will be “rocket round”, with 2 rounds of qualifying heats seeding the mains, with your fastest race being used to seed the mains.

This year, all classes, with the exception of street stocks, which is a 13.5 motor limits, all classes are open motor, and with the exception of the wingless sprints (which will utilize the DE sprint car tires), all classes will be open tires.

For racers that have never been to Lawton RC Raceway before, the track typically stays loose and loamy throughout the day and night, and the track rarely grooves up and takes rubber.  When the track hard packs, the track tends to lose bite. Racers should anticipate running a tire with some pin to it.

For short course based cars, the recommended tires include, in a super-soft compound:

Proline:  Holeshots
JConcepts: Sprinters, Lil Chasers, 3ds
AKA:  Impacts
DE: Grooved G6T tires

Sprint cars, late models, street stocks, Midwest modifieds should consider super soft:

Proline: Holeshot 2.0, 3.0
JConcepts:  Sprinters, 3Ds
AKA:  Impacts, Rebars
DE: Regulator

In addition to the racing action, there will also be the annual “Best of Beans” competition, where you can bring your best beans recipe to compete against others.  For every year that this competition has been held, Jacob Carter, from Burkburnett, Texas, has been voted “Best of Beans”.  Can he do it four years in a row, or will somebody else take the crown this year?
