The 2017 Kansas Dirt Oval Championship, better known as “The KDOC”, was once again hosted by the Kansas Dirt Slingers club at their home track of Checkered Flag R/C Raceway in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

The Checkered Flag facility is located less than a few miles from the Kansas Speedway, host of NASCAR, and has seen a long list of full-scale racing celebrities stopping by to watch and wheel the dirt oval.

The 2017 KDOC gathered a variety of over 100 racers, including local and regional dirt oval racers, travelling dirt oval racers from as far as California, and a handful of off-road racers (me included) who decided to take advantage of a beautiful weekend to race something new.

Tim and Donna McDowell are perhaps some of the nicest and most welcoming track owners you’ll find, however, they have one very strict rule – you MUST have fun. Each year Tim starts the KDOC event with a driver’s meeting that introduces the newest member of the Kansas Dirtslinger’s R/C Club Hall of Fame, which this year was awarded to Felix Pacheco. Following the Hall of Fame announcement, Tim addressed all of the racers by saying, “Welcome to Checkered Flag Raceway, we are here to have fun. If you don’t think you can have fun, or aren’t willing to have fun, the entrance is also the exit and it is right over there.” Everyone laughed and cheered, but it truly set the tone for a fun day of racing ahead.

The track crew and club members worked hard to prep the track, and keep it in shape as the day progressed. With the track grooving up, the racing started out fast, and only got faster.

As the Kansas summer sun began to set, racers gathered for the awards ceremony where the 2017 Kansas Dirt Oval Championship winners were crowned.

As many racers packed their bags preparing to head home, they were already talking about next year’s event. For R/C dirt oval racing in the Midwest, the annual Kansas Dirt Oval Championships is an event that despite a win or a loss, will almost always guarantee a good time. I would like to extend a personal thank you to Tim and Donna McDowell for the hospitality, the club and track crew for putting together a fast and fun race track, Clint Seitz behind the mic for putting on a great show, and to all of the fellow racers and new friends who made for a weekend of fun!
