The International Scale Touring Car class was added to the IFMAR Electric On-Road World Championships as a provisional category in 1998 when the race was held in Newcastle, England. That year, British driver David Spashett drove the XX-4 buggy-based Team Losi Racing Street Weapon to the title to complete a clean sweep that included the 1/12-scale and PRO 10 classes. And when Naoto Matsukura crossed the line in Florida last year, he became the seventh driver to win in the nine times the race has been held over 16 years.
