According to an article posted yesterday by Phoenix TV network ABC 15 Arizona, 41-year-old Jeffory Scott Helms of Cave Creek is being held without bond after being arrested by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on January 3 for having multiple sexual encouters with an underage girl.
The mother of the victim contacted Avondale police after the young teen told her that Helms had touched her in a sexual manner. The ABC 15 article notes that police have reviewed surveillance camera footage from at least two locations where Helms and the victim visited, and reportedly recorded a call where he admitted to touching the teen on at least three occasions. Helms is charged with seven counts of sexual conduct with a minor and sexual abuse.
The ABC 15 article also states that the prosecutors in the case argued for Helms not to receive bond eligibility due to concerns about him traveling for RC car races, and that other teens are often present at RC car events. In fact, Helms is perhaps best known for mentoring younger racers in the Phoenix area.
Helms has a preliminary hearing with the State of Arizona at the Maricopa County Superior Court scheduled for tomorrow.
