Short Course Kings - Tekin Race Report

Tekin team driver Mike Applegate wins the 13.5 Super Stock 2wd SC class at last weekends Short Course Kings race hosted in Ocala Florida. 86 entries with Mike taking Tq and the overall win. Mike held his composure throughout the entire 6 minute main fending off Billy Bruce half way through. Mike was using a Tekin Redline 13.5 and Tekin RS esc.

Colorado State Championships - JConcepts Race Report

This past weekend was the final race in the 2011 Colorado state series. The series went to five different tracks which include Colorado Fast Track (Hosted 2010 ROAR Nationals), Dirt Works, Rat Raceway, Longmont, and Thunder Valley.

Going into the weekend JConcepts Team Driver Kody Numedahl had an eight point lead in the pro buggy class so a descent finish would seal the deal.

After qualifying Kody was sitting second on the grid after having a few bobbles. The main started out according to plan as Kody jumped out to an early lead but a few crashes in the middle of the race put him back to second where he stayed for the remainder of the race. It was a good result but even better it allowed Kody to take the overall win in the Colorado State Series!

Hot Rod Driver Appreciation Race - Proline Race Report

Hot Rod Raceway in Santa Clarita CA. held their 2nd Driver Appreciation Race with discounted race entry fees as well as a free dinner. Hot Rod Hobbies holds their driver appreciation club race every first Friday of the month. The Pro 4 SC class had 16 drivers in attendance with a total of 80-90 entries Fri. night. Chad Bradley driving the Nexx10SC set the TQ time in both rounds of qualifying with Stephen Bess from RC Car Action putting his 4wd SC in the second position after qualifying. A few heats before the Pro 4 SC main, both Bess and Bradley had a hard fought 1:8 nitro main, so the Pro 4 main looked to be another good battle. Bess challenged Chad for the first few minutes of the Pro 4 main till a mistake by Bess either over a jump or corner allowed Chad to pull to a comfortable lead and eventually the win in the 8 minute main event. Chad said this was one of best nights that his Nexx10SC felt; he said he was able to drive it extremely hard, throwing it into the corners "It was just real fun to drive, very fast in and out of the corners" Chad said.@

Tyler Vik wins Top Gun Shootout - HPI Race Report

The annual Top Gun Challenge is hosted every year at Nor Cal Hobbies in Union City, CA, home of the Reedy Race of Champions and multiple ROAR National Championships.

With an on-site hobby shop, indoor pitting and a fantastic curbed asphalt track, Nor Cal has one of the best facilities in the country. The buzz surrounding this race was that the winner of the modified class would receive an automatic entry to the Invitational class at next year's Reedy Race. This drew in all the local fast guys and some out-of-towners. The race used the love-it-or-hate-it Reedy head's up format, so you needed both speed and consistency if you wanted a shot at winning.

My TCX felt really good in practice with all the new option parts. I ran a completely new set up from what I normally run, and I was happy that it was good from the beginning.

I got some good runs in the first day, and started off with three wins. Rick Hohwart had some tough luck in the opening rounds, but had plenty of speed to win the event. The 4th round was in the evening, where I had a poor start and Rick took a holeshot and never looked back to set the fastest overall time of the event, a crucial piece for tie-breaker in the Reedy format.

Sunday had some critical races, as me and Rick were both still capable of getting 6 wins. In the 6th round, I started first and after the first turn, Rick was on my butt in second. After a great run by Rick and a lot of blocking by me, I won by three tenths, giving Rick a 2nd for the round and denying him 6 wins. In the 7th round, I got my sixth win, clinching the overall and not needing to race the 8th round.

My HB TCX was great all weekend, and I didn't have to change anything on my set-up after racing started.

I want to thank James Arluck, Hiro Kasuya, and my sponsors HB-HPI, Speed Passion, Protek RC, Airtronics, A-Main Hobbies and Upgrade RC for all the support and great products.

Many thanks to Tina Ong for the great action photos!

Eastern States Challenge - Team Associated Race Report

Many of Region 1 & 2fs top drivers traveled to Vineland, NJ for the 25th annual Eastern States Challenge, held by Family Hobbies Raceway during Labor Day weekend. This Team Associated sponsored event consisted of 2 days of racing; on Saturday for 1/10 electric classes (2wd mod buggy, 4wd mod buggy, 2wd SCT, & 4wd SCT). And on Sunday for the 1/8 scale classes (1/8 nitro buggy, electric buggy, & nitro truggy).

Team Associated was well represented all weekend by AE/Reedy/LRP driver Mike Gay, as well as AE/Reedy driver Andy Castellini, and one of AEfs newest and youngest drivers Gunnar Rieck.

The track started out sandy and slick in practice, with the track recently hit hard by Hurricane Irene, but with a lot of help from the track crew, it quickly turned into high bite and blue grooved mid-way through Saturday, and continued to get faster throughout the weekend.

1:10 Scale Electric Saturday

Mike Gay held the TQ position in 2wd Mod Buggy after some very close qualifying with his Reedy/LRP powered FT B4.1. In the A-amain, Mike never lost the lead and drove a seamless race to win the 10 minute main by 15 seconds. Using Ryan Cavalieri's IFMAR Worlds winning setup made the car extremely consistent and easy to drive as the bite continued to increase.

Gunnar Rieckfs FT B44.1 secured the pole position in 4wd mod buggy, with Mike starting 2nd, one second behind. Gunnar took advantage of his TQ by pulling a quick lead after the first few laps. After Mikefs rough start he battled back to the front runners, putting down the fastest laps of the weekend to take over the lead and the win, with Gunnar finishing 2nd to put their FT B44.1fs on the top 2 steps of the podium.

Andy Castellini represented AE well in 2wd mod short course with his Reedy powered FT SC10 truck, respectably qualifying 2nd , but forced to retire early while in the lead in the A-main of this very popular class. Similarly in 4wd short course, Andy and Mike had good showings with the new SC10 4x4. Mike put his 4x4 in the TQ position to start the main, and throughout most of the race Andy and Mike ran in the 2nd and 3rd spots. Unfortunately Andy went out of the race with one lap to go, giving Mike the 2nd finishing spot with Andy finishing third.

1:8 scale Sunday

Electric 1:8 buggy had a host of talented drivers from the mid-atlantic area, but qualifying was totally dominated by Andyfs Reedy e-powered converted RC8.2, giving him the TQ position. The pole position proved to be a huge advantage at the start of the main as he checked out on the field from the 2nd turn of the race, as the field piled up in his rear view mirror. He went on to put away the 10 minute race by nearly lapping the field.

Nitro truggy was a tight and fast class which saw Gunnar put his RC8T WCE truggy in the 2nd qualifying position. Gunnar held the 2nd spot throughout the race, although unfortunately a pit stop flame out cost him some time to the leader, he was still putting down some of the fastest laps in this class. At age 14 hefs already got the speed to hang with seasoned racers, in the coming years his name will surely be on top.

Nitro buggy had the largest turnout of the weekend, and is the most popular class of off road racing throughout the warm months in this area. Andy Castellini took TQ with his #800 Reedy 121VR powered RC8.2, with Mike and Gunnar starting a close 2nd and 3rd. After the first lap of the main, it was clear that the new RC8.2 is dialed in the blue groove conditions, as Andy, Mike and Gunnar pulled a quick gap on the field. After a few minutes of swapping the top 3 positions, Mike took the lead with his Reedy #800 121VR powered RC8.2 and never looked back, taking the main by over a half a lap after 20 minutes of under-the-lights night racing. Gunnar battled for the 2nd position much of the race, and ended up on the podium in the 3rd position. The new revisions to the RC8 platform make the car much more forgiving in all conditions, as this car is proving to be the front runner on any track from blown-out to blue grooved.

Family Hobbies held the 1st ROAR Offroad Nationals in 1984, and 27 years later AE/Reedy are still winning at this track in the electric and nitro classes.
