X Factory Race Report:
*X – 6 SQUARED SUCCESS AT J CONCEPTS CLASH*
Leon McIntosh piloted his X – 6 Squared to third place in the mod buggy
class at the J Concepts Clash on December 11th. Competing on a very rough track because of terrific downpours of rain throughout the 3-day race,
After his hard-fought podium finish, McIntosh said, "Because of the rain the groove never really developed, and my X - 6 Squared is always outstanding in lower traction conditions. It was a very tough field with a bunch of strong drivers, but my car handled the conditions so well that I felt I had an advantage over most cars."
Family members Mark Smyka and Kory Ferguson finished third and fourth
respectively in stock buggy, and Team drivers Kevin Lesac and Mike Aliberti
put their brand new SCX – 60CFs in the A main of 2WD mod short course. Lesac and Aliberti had never run a lap with the new carbon fiber short course truck before arriving in Coral Springs, and each had but one round of practice with the trucks. “Stunning performance,” said Aliberti. Lesac added, “The truck was so easy to drive. Just a few changes between practice and round one and she’s handling like a dream.” X Factory engineer Paul Sinclair put his X – 6 Sq. in the A, and took third in 4WD with the new X – 7 prototype.
The Coral Springs facility is a great place to race with a dedicated track crew, and the track had a smooth flowing lay-out and was very well groomed when the racers arrived for practice on Thursday. Midway through Friday’s first round of qualifying, monsoon rains hit, dousing the track and leaving much of the pits under 3” or more of water. Most drivers thought the event was over; however, with a Herculean effort the Coral Springs crew got the track ready and some qualifying resumed before nightfall.
More rain arrived in race 5 Saturday morning, and again the track crew went to work, getting the track ready again in the afternoon allowing completion of round one and a full round two on Saturday, along with a few of the lower mains. Again Sunday morning it rained, but the crew was up to the job and the mains were completed. So the track was very rough for most of the weekend with lots of mud and loose dirt off the line, but it is a testament to the valiant and skillful crew that we could race at all.
