MWNS Race Report:
Report by Gary Wright

Every year I get emails from race tracks, some local some far away requesting to host an event. Granger Offroad in Granger, Indiana was just one of those tracks looking to host a MWNS event. Mike has sent me an email for the past 2 years hoping to get a shot. Last year I sent him a reply to set up an event for the 5th round this season. Granger Offroad hosted the 5th leg of the MWNS last Saturday on the 7th. This was a new track in the series and we were not disappointed. Mike knew what to do and did everything he could to make all the out of town racers feel welcome and did it on his birthday!

Mike spent the prior week prepping a new and fresh layout for us. Rolling and watering it just about every day. The layout had a very big sweeper coming on to the front with a double into a long triple. Followed up to a corner table top, into a 6 pack rhythm section into another table top, take a hard hair pin U turn, then came the crossover jump. The crossover was just enough lift to clear giving me some great photos! After the cross over a double was waiting, then under the cross over onto the sweeper. This was a fast and fun layout, Mike had done his homework! This track flowed very nicely!

With 3 other events taking place on the same day we still had a good turnout. This was a great opportunity for many MWNS racers to earn better points before we did our toss outs going into the finals next month. And boy did it work for some of our racers! Most that attended earned higher points and tossed out a previous event. The finals will be close, but that’s another report.

In the E-Buggy class we ran the A main 2 times. The first go Mother Nature decided it was time to water the track. Just over half way in we stopped the race to wait it out. An hour later the sky cleared up and we moved this main to the end of the show. For the restart of the main we started all the buggies in the order that we stopped the race. The main would be a 5 min main. A dash for all the marbles! Allen Richards received TQ honors by winning all 2 out of 3 qualifiers. Gregg McCarty pulled out early and never looked back for the win. Allen Richards with a close second and Grant Runkel with his bump from the B main took third.

Intermediate Truggy Brian Scott received TQ honors. Poll position 6th Jesse Wolkenheim immediately made his move to the front of the pack and would battle 2nd poll Travis Stensrud for the top spot the entire 25 min main. A third of the way in Travis had the lead only to give it back to Jesse a short time later. Jesse W held his lines and never opened a opportunity for Travis to pass. George N would hold his poll position and keep the last spot on the podium.

Intermediate Buggy Matt Cockrum took the TQ. Once again Jesse Wolkenheim made his move early and this time never looked back! Our TQ Matt made several attempts to regain the top spot but Jesse closed the doors. Matt would have to take second on the podium just 8 seconds back. George N once again had to settle for third.

Pro Truggy Greg Baumel received a well deserved TQ for the day. A battle started early on with Matt Lust in this 25 min A main. Matt and Greg traded spots several times the first half of the race. However Matt Lust would eventually get a comfortable lead and end up lapping the field and take the coveted number 1 on the podium. Greg Baumel finished 2nd. The third spot on the podium was a battle between Greg Wilks and Jon Osmena. This battle lasted the last half of the race only second apart, being the most exciting battle to watch. Wilks fought off Jon to the line just 1.633 ahead. Talk about a close race!

Pro Buggy Once again Greg Baumel took the TQ! Greg started out in front with Grant Runkel following closely. Half way into the race they traded spots back and forth a few times with Kyle Bronner hot on their trail making his way up from 7th. As Grant and Greg were fighting for top podium, Grant pulled out front and Kyle moved into second closely behind Greg. Greg made several tried to close the gap to no avail. Grant would get the win followed by Kyle in second and Greg third.
