Mike's Hobby Shop in Carrollton, TX played host to the 2012 Short Course Showdown Finals. Mike Darnell (owner and operator) and Scotty Ernst (race promoter and director) put on an amazing event that brought in 269 entries for some fierce side-by-side action. The track appeared to be a fairly simple layout by design, but with its jump placements and slick conditions, this track turned out to be very technical, so tire selection was of the utmost importance.
The 2WD Modified SCT was full of heavyweight battles throughout the three rounds between Team Associated driver Scott Brown and Losi driver Frank Root. Frank and Scott traded TQ positions every round with Frank finally taking the last round by a few seconds, with Brown ending up qualifying second.
Main day was full of action as the lower mains saw drivers battle it out for those two elusive bump-up spots. With the lower mains finished, the final A Mains were set and the 7-minute A Mains got underway.
The 2WD Modified SCT class proved to be a close battle as the top three positions changed several times among four drivers. Frank Root led the first lap with the SC10s of Scott Brown and Greg Hodapp close behind, but a bobble by Root open the door for Brown and Hodapp to make a pass for first and second. Root recovered quickly and put the pressure back on Hodapp and forced him into a mistake on lap 5, which allowed Root and fourth-place Team Associated driver Brian Kinwald to scoot by for the second and third positions. With Brown still leading and setting a conservative pace, Root was able to get back to the front by lap 12, then made a pass on Brown for the lead. But on lap 19 Root made a costly mistake, allowing Brown to regain the lead. Brown then put together a string of fast laps to open up a 3-second lead and secure the win, with Root second and Kinwald third.
