Press Release From Tamiya USA:

It is with great regret and sorrow that I share news of our beloved Chairman, Shunsaku Tamiya. He passed away on 7/18/25 at the age of 90. We can’t express enough how much it saddens us to have lost our inspirational leader. At Tamiya America, it always gave us immense pleasure to have our chairman come visit us in the USA and in turn us going to see him in Japan at Tamiya hobby events he was deeply involved with. Mr. S. Tamiya always made sure to let his global staff know how much he appreciated everyone’s efforts in being staunch advocates for the company he’s led since being appointed President in 1977.

If two words could be used to summarize his life, those two words are passion and legend. Passion because he instilled in all of Tamiya’s workforce what it meant to have a passion for creating rewarding hobby kit experiences through his demand for quality and the experience of assembly. He was a legend because he, like other leaders of iconic brands, revolutionized the industry that in large part, he shaped. We can’t think of any other example where a person’s name is used to describe pure excellence. If you’ve heard the phrase; “That’s Tamiya quality” you know what I mean.

We leave you with this closing memory of Mr. Tamiya. He cherished children. For years now, the annual Shizuoka Hobby Show, where Tamiya headquarters is found, Friday is reserved to be “Kids Only Day.” Schools from all around Shizuoka City buses in kids of all grades to come experience the show, absent of adult attendees. Before the kids are let into the show hall, Mr. Tamiya would strategically position himself in front of the entrance to firsthand see the children’s exuberance. The smile on Mr. Tamiya’s face is one that can’t be described, but to say “ear to ear smile” would not do the moment justice. Those of us fortunate to have known the legend knew full well he was a kid at heart to the very end. It is this moment, and others that will forever remind us why it’s important to continue his legacy.

Rest in peace to our beloved, Shunsaku Tamiya.
