ProTek R/C "TruGrip" Maximum Traction Tire Compound
$7.99

This past weekend I made my way to the R/C Race Barn in Jefferson City, Missouri for the annual "Summer Offroad Shootout" event. The track is indoors, however, with cool temperatures and a breeze across the racing surface, the track dried out very quickly. What started as a very hard packed and tacky track, quickly turned into a dry slick track for the final heat races in each round.

To give my truck a little extra grip, I decided to try out the ProTek R/C "TruGrip" Maximum Traction Compound. This traction compound is designed for damp, wet or extra slick track surfaces and cool outdoor temperatures. The Maximum compound is the most "potent" of the three compounds.

Pros:
  • Definitely softens the tire.
  • Does provide additional traction in the appropriate conditions.
  • Absolutely no odor.
Cons:
  • Softens tires so much that you begin to question,  "Is this traction worth a new set of tires at the end of the day?"
Conclusion:
The ProTek R/C "TruGrip" Maximum Traction Compound does EXACTLY what is says it will do. It's super potent formula softens the rubber of your tires which initially provides more grip on even an icy slick track, HOWEVER, by softening the tires so much the lifespan of the tire and tread is greatly decreased. Should you use "TruGrip" Maximum Traction Compound everywhere? No. Should you use it in the conditions described above? Yes, assuming you brought extra tires. Overall it works great, doesn't stink, and is easily portable in a sturdy spray bottle.

If using the ProTek R/C "TruGrip" Traction Compounds, we recommend using the "Medium" compound in most situations, as opposed to the "Maximum" compound.

Racers Edge Maxi Mount Foam & Plastic Body Discs
$1.99

When you build a new car you spend an extra $20-30 to buy the latest and greatest new body to go on it. Then you spend another $40-75 on a super trick paint job to look cool. There is nothing worse than coming back from your first run on the track only to find your body is cracked and missing paint from rubbing on the body posts.

To beef up our body, and extend it's overall lifespan, we decided to try out the Racer's Edge Maxi Mount Foam and Plastic Body Discs. In each package you receive four adhesive backed foam discs, which you place on the under side of the body around each body mount hole. You also receive four plastic discs in which you can place on top of the body for added reinforcement and protection from the top side (we chose to leave off the plastic discs).

Pros:
  • Foam discs protect the body from rubbing and scratching on body posts.
  • Plastic discs protect the body from being damaged or cracked by the body clips.
  • Includes enough to outfit almost any R/C car.
  • Foam discs include adhesive backer and pre-cut centers for easy stick-and-go installation.
Cons:
  • Plastic discs are rather large for 1:10 vehicles, which is why we reserved them for our 1:8 lineup instead.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, after spending nearly $100 or more on a custom painted aftermarket body, it seem foolish not to spend another $1.50 to protect one of the most high wear spots on the body. These obviously do not protect the entire under side of the body, so we still resort back to our painter's tape "armor" on other high wear areas. If only these were offered in a slightly smaller size for 1:10 scale buggy, these would receive an easy 5/5.
