Track Records Set at Region 9 On-road Championships

Race Report from William Land:

N-Control RC Raceway in Dale, Texas hosted the ROAR Region 9 Championship race, drawing racers from across the region to scenic rural Texas this past weekend.  N-Control’s medium-sized track features a technical layout on smooth asphalt.  Hard rain before sunrise Sunday caused a brief delay to the race’s start, and provided a clean surface for the event, freshly prepped that morning.  Temperatures rose through the second round of the mains, peaking in the mid-70s, but the third main continued under the lights as the track cooled and traction dropped noticeably.  Track records were set in Mod Touring and GT8E at the event.

In Mod Touring, Chris Adams swept the field, winning both qualifying rounds and the first two mains.  He broke his own track record in the second main.  A tangle with traffic in the second qualifier created his only serious challenge of the day, as Chris Kemper took advantage and finished less than 2 seconds behind.  In the mains, after two solid wins Adams asked to announce the final main, and in his absence Johnee Fenimore took the victory.  Having edged out Toastie Toth in main two, this gave him the advantage for second overall.

Stock Touring used handout motors for this race, leading to extremely close racing throughout the event.  Toastie Toth was able to hot lap every round of racing, and although inconsistent performance in the first qualifier left him in third to Larry Meyers and Andrew Dougherty, he managed the win in every subsequent race.  Despite struggling in the first main, Dougherty’s strong finishes in the remaining two allowed him to edge out Johnee Fenimore in the final results.

In the second handout class of the event, the largest field of the day competed in tight racing.  No one was able to upset Brian Fong’s clean sweep of the first four rounds, and he chose to watch the final main.  Josh Barry edged out Sean Bloch by 0.2 seconds in the third main to take second overall honors.

GT8E has been a growing class in Texas, and a full field of competitors ensured exciting racing on the technical course.  After dropping out early in the first qualifier, Wayne Stuntz went on a tear of three straight wins including the first two mains rounds, a track record lap, and a record run.  Through the mains Doug Bryson and Aaron Grant were battling in second and third, but tangles for all of the top three let Paul Gaertner take the third main for second overall.

As one might expect, the changing traction throughout the rounds had the most significant impact on F1, and this class saw the most varied finishing order throughout the day.  Chris Jones improved his performance all day, and he took top honors by winning the final two mains.  TQ Marcus Williams won the first main, and he and Doug Bryson filled the top three for the remaining two mains.

The weekend’s six-car Novice field was half filled by one family, the Hammonds, and it’s no surprise that they featured in the class as well.  Father Kerman Hammond won both qualifiers, fighting in one with son Massimo and the other with Chris Balusek.  Massimo Hammond stepped up in the main rounds, taking two of the three close battles over Balusek for top finish overall.

Euro Truck saw a total sweep by Sean Bloch, while second place finisher Josh Barry struggled with traction rolls and third position Aiden Ferrell pushed his slower truck all day.
