Flashback: 2015
North Star RC Cup at the North Star Mohican Casino and Resort
This upcoming Monday marks the two-year anniversary of the North Star RC Cup, a one-off event held on temporary tracks built at the North Star Mohican Casino and Resort in Bowler, Wisconsin. Avid ATV and motocross racer Curtis Kroening teamed up with LiveRC to host some of the region’s best electric off-road and dirt oval drivers and put on a show for the crowd. The casino offered up nearly $7000 in prize money for the top three finishers in select classes on both tracks to raise the stakes and the excitement.
The casino took the event seriously, even putting up a roadside billboard as well as signage throughout the resort to attract a crowd
The promotion worked, with a steady stream of spectators all weekend.
Matt Gerald’s #395 LiveRC.com single buggy and Chad Rayford’s #29 Flying Dutchman Pro-Lite truck were parked in the pit area for racers and viewers alike to check out.
Despite a lot of rain in the days preceding the event, the track crew put together two first-rate racetracks in time for the event to begin. The oval track was protected from the weather by a big tent.
The off-road track wasn’t so lucky, and took a lot more work to get in race-ready condition. The end result, though, was a loamy and “old-school” surface that produced great racing.
In addition to long-time crew member Erik Jensen, LiveRC picked veteran racers Ben Ellis and Matt Gosch to organize and run the event - and they got to do some racing of their own as well.
So, too, did Brandon Rohde.
And of course, the event was streamed live on our site.
The HobbyTown USA franchise from nearby OshKosh set up shop trackside to introduce potential racers to their first vehicles, and even ran a Slash try-me track.
Local radio station Z100 of Eau Claire, WI also gave away new Slash trucks over the radio every 20 minutes for a few peak hours on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the arrival of a new general manager and promotions staff at the casino signaled the end of the North Star RC Cup after just one year.
